"DATATEGY EARLY CAREERS PROGRAM" With Julien Courteville

Can you tell us about your role at the Datategy, and what kind of projects or initiatives you have been working on during your internship?

I had 2 major tasks at Datategy during my internship, the first one was to refactor some code inside papAI, propagate pedantic typing to clean the code base of the project, and help me learn the way papAI was coded.
papAI has a strong architecture and has really solid foundation and robust code, to be ready to any improvement it will have in later development.
The second one was to set up automatic deployment of another backend application, to improve the reactivity in case of problems on the server side.

How have the Datategy teams help you to develop your skills and competencies in the data industry, and what have you learned during your time in the program?

I had a lot of liberty in how I was working, but the team was always there to answer any of my question, and to guide me if I had any problem with the task i was given. I learned a lot about git and how to use it in a team environment, about pedantic and the structure of the code to improve the code base to do a clean project. On the second task, I had complete freedom on how to improve the deployment, a lot of trust was given, as I learned a lot of DevOps skills such as docker networking and security.

What kind of mentorship and support have you received during your internship, and how has this helped you to navigate your first professional experience?

As i said the team was always ready to answer my question, as the task was clear, the guidance was not to much, as i could learn by myself, but they never let me lost during the process. And when the task was a bit tricky, i was told that i could ask the help of anyone (from the DevOps to the doctor) to help me find a clear way.

How has the Datategy Early Careers Program fostered a sense of initiative and team spirit among its participants, and what values do you think are important for success in the data industry?

As the team is still kind of small, they are happy to teach, or let you get new skill. It will be usefull later on for you and for them. I was rapidly ask my own idea about the subject i was working on, and was listened when i had an initiative on what could be done to improve the application. Maintaining your knowledge on the subject, and always pushing forward, don’t let yourself thinking your know everything is for me one of the important thing for success, in data everything go fast, you have new tech very often, so keep looking into it !

Can you share any challenges or obstacles that you have faced during your internship, and how you have overcome them with the support of Datategy teams?

When i got into my second task, the server i was working on shutdown on a week-end. I just arrived on the project, and was the one that had to make it running back, nobody was aware of why did it break, and we had a time limit to fix it. I went to see a lot of teammate to help me understand what could be the problem, how I could fix it, and in the end that was one of those conversation that give me the answer and made find the solution !

How has the Datategy supported diversity and inclusion among its participants, and what impact has this had on your experience in the program?

That is one the best things in datategy, you have a lot of different nationality, people come from all around the world, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, America, China, India, …. I had to speak english a lot, and learn about other cultures, other way of thinking and that is definitely a plus for me, fell like you could travel all around the world just by talking with your co-worker !

What do you hope to achieve during your time at the Datategy, and how do you see this experience helping you to achieve your long-term career goals in the data industry?

What advice would you give to other young graduates or students who are interested in applying for the Datategy Early Careers Program, and how can they make the most of this opportunity to develop their skills and launch their careers in the data industry?

If you are lucky enough to be able to work in Datategy, don’t hesitate too much; you will have a friendly environment that will push you to improve, discover new tech, and guide you to learn a lot. You won’t feel useless or left behind, as the person they want the best for you as they understand that the best for them. You won’t lose your time working there.
